Five Southernisms You Might Not Know
Whether you grew up in the south, or have just been here to visit, we have a thoughtfully complex lexicon of fun phrases that describe about every situation you might run into at a family gathering or the weekend football game. Here are a few of our favorites:
“Madder than a wet hen!” - Have you ever seen a chicken that got splashed on? Maybe not. But trust us, it’s not a pretty sight
“Since I was knee high to a grasshopper” - Could mean that someone is short, but generally, when you’ve known something for a long time, or since you were as small as a grasshopper
“THAT DOG’LL HUNT!” or That dog won’t hunt - That idea is going to work out great, or you might as well give up on that plan.
“I’m as full as a tick!” - When you’ve had just one too many plates of shrimp and grits, you might feel like a deer tick about to pop after an all you can eat buffet!
“We’re living high on the hog!” - This means you are living life large! The best meat from pork is said to be from its back and upper legs. So anyone who was wealthy could eat the high parts of the hog.
What’s your favorite “Southernism?” We’d love to hear it.
